Miss Missouri crown is a ‘big deal’ for LGBT community
Miss Missouri 2016, Erin O’Flaherty, made history and made a statement when she became the first openly gay Miss America contestant.
In a June 24 interview on Good Morning America, O’Flaherty said, “I’m excited to represent the LGBT community (because) we’re underrepresented in public positions of influence.”
O’Flaherty’s platform is suicide prevention. She works closely with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and with the Trevor Project, which provides a suicide hotline for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.
